‘See You Online’

Centre for Digital Cultures and Media Literacy of the NRU HSE began its work on the online course ‘Understanding Media’ for Russian and international public who are interested in the challenges of media and informational literacy. The course will be available at one of the educational digital platforms. It is produced in Russian and is the first online educational course in our country that is dedicated to various questions of appropriate online behavior and to the production of critical thinking of media content consumers.

The course ‘Understanding media’ is created on the base of the NRU HSE eLearning office. The key personnel that consists of leading professors of the media and informational literacy schools and HSE minor ‘Media and mass communications’ such as Aleksander Arhangelsky, Anna Kachkaeva, Anna Novikova, Anna Kolchina, Svetlana Shomova is involved in its production. Many of these professionals are academic professors of the HSE School of Media and the great representatives of media industry: tv hosts, tv critics, directors of documentary and fiction movies. The course will include topics that are traditionally included in the news literacy disciplines and that intercross online courses produced in other countries (for example, in the USA and Hong Kong) and also unique lectures that expand the idea of modern media informational literacy and that take a step towards its more sophisticated edges, like movie literacy. 

The first part of the course will include the discussion about the role of the news in the modern communicative environment, about fact journalism and opinion journalism, about methods to verify sources of information and about the power of visual image. The second part will help listeners to understand peculiarities of ‘digital generation’ and changes that were brought to everyday life by means of digital media and to take the step towards understanding of how the formalists’ culture is connected to the modern visual culture and what is meant by the ‘new subjectivity’ in digital environment. 

The launch of the online course ‘Understanding media’ is planned in year 2020. No prior specials skills are required to enter it, one just has to be an active consumer of media content and to be interested in modern media.
