International Research Seminar “Digital Technologies and Religious Practices”. Online
On March 17, 2022, the HSE Center for Digital Cultures and Media Literacy is holding a seminar on the digitalization of religious practices. The focus of the seminar is the attitude of various faiths representatives to the use of media in religious practices, different views on the use of new technologies to support everyday religiosity both among religious leaders and within communities.
The process of mediatization today has affected all spheres of our life, including the religious one. This area is characterized by a large number of long-established rules that influence modern practices. Not all of them support the use of new media technologies, in some cases they even conflict with them. During the pandemic the collective performance of religious practices has become more difficult, it facilitated the adoption of these technologies and the transfer to the digital space of a number of religious practices that previously seemed to be implemented only offline.
During the seminar we will discuss the following issues (the list can be enlarged):
• How and why is the digitalization of religious practices criticized? What are the arguments in favor of its adoption?
• How do online and offline religious practices compare? Are offline practices becoming the standard? Can digital media bring new elements to religious practices?
• How has the pandemic affected the attitude towards the digitalization of religious practices?
• How can religious norms, local histories of the Internet and the general cultural context influence attitudes towards the digitalization of religious practices?
After the invited speakers deliver their talks, there will be a one-hour discussion with the seminar participants.
The seminar will be held in English and Russian with Zoom translation.
The event starts at 15:00 (Moscow time).
